August 2009 updates:

1. "Young Mothers Intiative" wins BYCAV Imagine A Community Contest

Congratulations to Ruth Crooks and Candace Lue of the Young Mothers Initiative for winning the first round of BYCAV's Imagine A Community prize.

Their project titled Fun N' Dance is a 5 week program that will empower and engage  young mothers in the Jamestown area through the art forms of music and dance. The dance workshops will have guest speakers that will present talks on parenting, maternal and child health, nutrition, social service oppurtunities, employment and advocacy against the stigmatizing young mothers. Fun N' Dance stood out from the other applications that were recieved in this cycle of the contest as it clearly identified the important need for this program and advocacy for the isolation faced by young mothers. Ruth Crooks and Candace Lue envision a program that will create a strong network of young mothers that will serve as not only as a means of providing a support system, but a way of propagating vital information that can change the lives of young mothers.

As winners of the Imagine A Community contest, Young Mothers Initiative was awarded $5000 towards the project idea, and $500 for their efforts in creating the program and making it happen.

The Grant Selection Committee would like to thank all those that applied for this round of the application. Round Two of Imagine A Community will soon be announced on the website Mid-August with all the information that is required for applying for the next round. The Grant Selection Committee encourages applicants who are re-applying to take advantage of the "Grant 101" sessions where a BYCAV member will present a session on filling out the application properly and show youth how they can effectively lay out their project idea on a grant application.

 5. Join the Conversation: BYCAV Facebook Group
Wanna speak your mind, share your thoughts and propose good ideas? On this website, you will not find blogs or opinion editorials, because that's not what we do. BYCAV workshop6. BYCAV 101
See Calendar for upcoming dates

On March 2009, BYCAV launched a new workshop entitled BYCAV 101 "The Truth". BYCAV plans to have these workshops as a means of educating and empowering underserved youth in the priority neighbourhoods. Through workshops facilitated by BYCAV, we will provide resources and education unavailable to these youth on a regular basis on issues important to them. Our workshops will allow youth to ask the questions they dare not ask adults or authority figures and empower them to think critically and create solutions for themselves and their communities.
We at BYCAV believe that educating youth and encouraging a safe atmosphere of unity and understanding for youth while providing them with activities that are positive where they learn from, share and cooperate with others is necessary for Toronto to become a less violent and more inclusive space for all.

BYCAV has with your assistance chosen the top six finalists of the Imagine a Community competition. We are now contacting the finalists and are moving into stage two of choosing our winners.

Stage two includes interviewing the top six finalists to decide who are the two winners for this round of Imagine a Community. The steering committee members of BYCAV have ratified the top six finalists and have taken the top six applications home to assist in coming up with questions to ask the finalists.

This interview process will hopefully be done in one day. Please can everyone send me their availabilities for the interview. For our last round the interviews were conducted by one Steering Committee Member, our YCF representative and myself. Due to having more finalists this year we would love for our U of T representative to also be present for all six interviews or maybe we can even have one representative  for the first  three interviews and the other for the latter three.

The interviews would ideally take place late this week or early next week. Sunday of this week is also an option. Interviews will not be longer than half an hour each and minutes will be taken and sent out to all absent Imagine a Community subcommittee members for conferrance on the top two chosen by the Imagine a Community Interview Committee.

Sincerely,

Solange Jacob
BYCAV Project Coordinator
